Description:
The 82901M was a modular, dual 5.25 inch floppy disc drive with an HP-IB interface. It was developed and initially manufactured by HP's Corvallis Division before moving to the newly created Greeley Division in 1980. Each disc has a capacity of 270KB. The 82901M has an average access time of 187ms and was designed for use with 80 Series and 120/125 computers.
The 82901 used the AMIGO command set.
The 82901 was obsoleted in March of 1985.

Collector's Notes:
82901 and 82902 5.25-inch disc drives are not as reliable as their 8-inch predecessors (9885 and 9895). Our experience is that less than half of the units we receive will work. The first step to restore functionality is the clean the read/write heads. If that doesn't fix the problem, then remove each drive assembly and use contact cleaner to clean all moving parts. It is not uncommon for grease and dust to interfere with mechanisms. Then use silicon oil to lubricate the head slide rails and disc turning mechanisms. These steps will usually fix about half of the problems. Other problems that are harder to fix include: bad controller board (10%) and dead disc-turning motor. The power supplies on these machines are very reliable. The first step in troubleshooting electronics is to look at the bank of LEDs on the controller board immediately after power up. The desired condition is for the +12, +5 and 2 LEDs to be illuminated (and the others to be off). If either the +12 or +5 LEDs is off, it means the +12V or +5V power supply isn't feeding. Check fuse f1 and f2 on the power supply module to make sure they have not blown. On most power supplies, these fuses are soldered onto the PCB; in some power supplies these fuses can be manually replaced.
